Carmel Mission

The Carmel Mission is very close to Carmel Point. This renowned Mission, considered by many to be the most important California Mission because Father Junipero Serra is buried here.

In 2015, Pope Francis elevated Mission founder Father Junipero Serra to sainthood. This has substantially increased the interest in and visits to the Mission. The move has also reinvigorated the grievances of the local Native Americans whose ancestors suffered under Father Serra’s rule.
