Crime

Those of us who have lived here for decades can testify that crime in Carmel Point is a very rare occurrence and, when it does occur, is of the misdemeanor kind such as checking car doors to see if they are unlocked and open for theft.  Obviously, as anywhere, do not succumb to complacency. Take the usual precautions such as locking your car and homes.

Other things that impede crime in the neighborhood include the fact that most homes are alarmed (see the “Alarm” section below), and there is a lot of coming and going by gardeners, delivery and construction personnel, dog walkers, and tourists.  Several of us also like to walk at night. 

Many second homeowners also use home management companies who take care of and monitor homes when they are empty. And there are a few neighbors who even employ private security guards. Finally, possibly one of the best crime deterrents is having a dog on your property, which many of us do!

Alarms

If you install or use an alarm in your home, a permit is required and can be obtained from the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office. Your alarm company will be able to advise you on the requirements. These include fees assessed for false alarms that result in response by Sheriff’s deputies.

The intent of these requirements (which also exist in Carmel-by-the-Sea) is to impel homeowners to keep their alarm systems in good operating condition and to train homeowners on how to use them.  Several reliable and licensed alarm companies exist that can help you install and use this equipment.
