Sheriff & Highway Patrol

Carmel Point is served by two law enforcement agencies:

When in doubt about who to call in urgent situations, just dial 911 and you can be directed to the local agency that can best help you.

Monterey County Sheriff's Office is in charge of general crimes and violations such as physical harm to property and people, fraud, and drug enforcement, etc. The patrol division office that serves Carmel Point is the The Coastal Station, located in the Monterey courthouse at 1200 Aguajito Rd.

There used to be a Community Field Office at the Crossroads Shopping Center, but this office has closed and there is no information about whether it will be re-opened. The County Coroner is also a division of the Sheriff's Office.

Otherwise, to directly contact the Monterey County Sheriff's Office in non-emergency situations, call (831) 647-7702. Their crime Tip Line is (888) 833-4TIP (4847). Calls to the Tip Line can be anonymous.

The California Highway Patrol is in charge, not only of vehicle and roadway issues on Carmel Point, but other crimes as well. Since there can be cross-over in their jurisdiction with the Sheriff's Office, it's best to call 911 in urgent circumstances. For instance, if you see a vehicle being driven erratically, an animal on the roadway, or a hazardous obstacle on the road, call 911.

In clearly non-emergency situations, the CHP can be called at 1-800-TELL-CHP (1-800-835-5247).  Non-emergency incidents include: Accident reports, non-emergency traffic hazards, tow questions, CHP office locations, vehicle theft tips, and community outreach programs. CHP has personnel that answer the 1-800-TELL-CHP telephone number 24 hours a day, seven days a week. 

The CHP also partners with various law enforcement agencies and broadcasters to provide urgent bulletins to the public about child-abduction cases, violence against peace officers, and incidents of the elderly or impaired who have gone missing. PLEASE NOTE: Carmel-by-the-Sea police do not officially have jurisdiction over the Carmel Point area because we are in Monterey County. However, you may see their patrol cars in the neighborhood since the entire Carmel Beach is within their jurisdiction.  They can also serve as backup to other law enforcement agencies.
